To be paid by TikTok for your videos through the Creator Rewards Program (what most people mean by monetizing TikTok), you need at least 10,000 followers, at least 100,000 video views in the last 30 days, and you must be 18 or older. Other ways to earn have lower bars: in the US you can join TikTok Shop as an affiliate creator with 1,000 followers, LIVE Gifts depend on being able to go LIVE, and brand deals have no official minimum at all.

Below we go through each option, what it asks for, and what you can realistically expect from it. If you want to know how much creators actually earn once they qualify, read our guide on how much TikTokers make.

How many followers do you need for Creator Rewards?

The Creator Rewards Program pays you for views on your videos. TikTok launched it in March 2024, when the Creativity Program came out of beta. To join, TikTok asks for:

  • A personal account in good standing (not a business account)
  • At least 18 years old
  • At least 10,000 followers
  • At least 100,000 video views in the last 30 days
  • An account in a country where the program is available

Only original videos over one minute long earn. TikTok says its formula looks at originality, play duration (watch time and how many people finish the video), search value and engagement (likes, comments and shares). Only qualified views count, which TikTok describes as genuine views from the For You feed. A video generally needs about 1,000 qualified views before it starts earning, and TikTok shows the exact rules for your account in the Creator Rewards dashboard.

TikTok does not publish a fixed rate per view. Two videos with the same view count can earn very different amounts. So be wary of any website that gives an exact figure. If you are in the UK, our guide to TikTok Creator Rewards in the UK looks at what qualified views and earnings mean there.

LIVE Gifts

During a LIVE, viewers can send you virtual Gifts bought with Coins. Gifts turn into Diamonds in your account, and eligible creators can exchange Diamonds for money under TikTok's own terms. TikTok sets the rate and shows it in the app.

To collect Diamonds, TikTok says you must live where LIVE Gifts are offered, be 18 or older (19 in South Korea), be able to go LIVE, and keep your account in good standing. So the real follower bar here is whatever you need to go LIVE, which varies by region. Our guide on how many followers you need to go live on TikTok covers that in detail. Subscription

Subscription lets your fans pay you a monthly fee in return for extra perks you offer them. TikTok's rules are 18 or older, an account in good standing, at least 10,000 followers and 100,000 video views in the past calendar month. LIVE creators can also qualify by meeting TikTok's separate LIVE requirements.

Subscription works best once you have a loyal group of viewers who already come back for your content. A large but passive audience rarely pays monthly.

How many followers do you need for TikTok Shop affiliate?

As a TikTok Shop affiliate, you earn a commission when people buy products through your videos or LIVEs. In the US, TikTok Shop's creator eligibility policy asks for at least 1,000 followers, age 18 or over and a US base, and newer sign-ups must also pass an identity check. Creators under 5,000 followers start in a pilot program for at least 30 days, with a cap of three shoppable videos a day and no access to campaigns. Rules in other countries can differ, so check TikTok Shop's page for your region.

For many creators this is the earliest route to income, because the follower bar is lower and there is no view-count requirement to join. For the full rules country by country, including the UK and Germany, see our guide to TikTok Shop affiliate requirements.

Brand deals

Brand deals have no official follower minimum. A brand pays you directly to make a video about its product. Smaller creators with a clear niche and an engaged audience can still get deals, because many brands care about who watches, not just how many. TikTok's own creator marketplace, TikTok One, has its own entry rules, but brands can also contact you directly.

If you post sponsored content, turn on TikTok's content disclosure setting so viewers know it is an ad. Want a rough idea of your rate? Try our free calculator below.

Can you make money on TikTok with 1,000 followers?

Yes, but not from TikTok's view-based payouts. With 1,000 followers in the US you can apply to TikTok Shop as an affiliate, starting in the limited pilot described above. You can also pitch small brand deals, since there is no official minimum. Creator Rewards stays locked until 10,000 followers, and so does Subscription unless you qualify through TikTok's separate LIVE rules.

Follower count also unlocks some profile features. TikTok limits who can add a clickable website link to their profile by account type and follower count, which matters if you want to send viewers to a shop or a booking page. Our guide on how many followers you need for a link in your TikTok bio explains the rules. Still working towards 1,000? Read how to get your first 1,000 followers on TikTok.

Can you make money on TikTok without followers?

Not through TikTok itself. Creator Rewards, Subscription, LIVE Gifts and TikTok Shop affiliate all have a follower or eligibility bar of some kind. The one route without an official minimum is a brand deal, where a brand pays you directly. In practice a brand still wants to see that real people watch and react to your videos, so a small but engaged audience is usually the starting point.

Views matter as much as followers. Creator Rewards checks your views over the last 30 days, and brands look at how your recent videos perform. If your reach has suddenly dropped, our guide to TikTok shadowbans explains what is and is not going on.

How to reach the thresholds faster

  1. Switch to a personal account. Creator Rewards needs a personal account. If you use a business account, you can switch back to a personal account in settings before you apply.
  2. Make videos over one minute. Shorter videos do not earn from Creator Rewards. Plan some content that can hold attention for longer. Our guide on how long TikToks and Reels should be can help you choose.
  3. Post consistently in one niche. A clear topic helps TikTok show your videos to the right people, and helps brands understand who you reach. Check our guide to the best time to post on TikTok.
  4. Fix weak views before chasing followers. The 100,000-view rule looks at your last 30 days, so it keeps moving. If your views have dropped, read why your TikTok views might be low.
  5. Start with Shop or brand deals. You do not have to wait for 10,000 followers. TikTok Shop (in the US from 1,000 followers) and small brand deals can start earning sooner.

Realistic expectations

Reaching 10,000 followers unlocks the programs. It does not guarantee income. What you earn depends on watch time, engagement, your niche, your country and how often you post. Many creators combine several sources, such as Creator Rewards, LIVE Gifts and a few brand deals, rather than relying on one. If you post on other apps too, compare the bars for Instagram, Facebook and X.

Some creators use a starter boost of followers to give a new account social proof. Folzora offers TikTok followers for new accounts for this, but be clear about what it does and does not do. Bought followers can help a profile look established, but they do not watch your videos. Your view count, watch time and real engagement still come from good content, and those are what TikTok's programs and brands look at. TikTok's Community Guidelines also do not allow the trade of services that artificially boost engagement, and TikTok says it removes fake likes and followers when it detects inauthentic metrics.
