TikTok does not officially use the word shadowban. What people call a shadowban is usually one of two things TikTok does document: a video marked not eligible for the For You feed, or an account that has been made ineligible for the For You feed and harder to find. To check, turn on analytics in TikTok Studio and look for an eligibility notice on the video, then open Account check to see any violations or restrictions. If you think a decision is wrong, you can appeal it in the app. Strikes for rule breaks expire after 90 days.

Is TikTok shadowban real?

Not by that name. TikTok's help centre and Community Guidelines never use the word. But TikTok is open about keeping some content out of the For You feed, which is where many people discover new creators. Its rules say it makes certain content that may not be suitable for a broad audience ineligible for the For You feed, even when that content is allowed on the app.

There is one important difference from the usual idea of a shadowban. TikTok says it tells you. Videos made ineligible for the For You feed show a notice in your analytics (if analytics is turned on), and violations show up in your inbox and in Account check. So the first step is to look, not to guess.

What TikTok can restrict

RestrictionWhat it meansWhere you see it
One video not eligible for the For You feedThe video stays up but won't be shown in the For You feedThe video's analytics in TikTok Studio
Whole account not eligible for the For You feedFor a period, the account's content is kept off the For You feed and is harder to find in searchNotifications and Account check
Removed video and a strikeThe video breaks the Community Guidelines and comes down. A first, non-severe violation usually gets a warning insteadInbox: System notifications, then Account updates
Feature restrictionLimits on features like LIVE, comments or direct messages, often temporaryNotifications and Account check
Account banPermanent removal after severe or repeated violationsA banner when you try to log in

Note that an account can be held back without any content being removed. Since 2024, TikTok can make an entire account temporarily ineligible for the For You feed if the creator repeatedly posts content that goes against its For You feed standards. TikTok says the account and its content will also be harder to find in search, and that it notifies creators and lets them appeal.

How to check if you are shadowbanned on TikTok

  1. Turn on analytics. Go to your profile, open the menu, then TikTok Studio, Analytics, Get started and Turn on. TikTok says you need analytics turned on to see its For You feed eligibility decisions.
  2. Check a video's eligibility. Open the post, tap More insights or More options, then Analytics. If the video was made ineligible for the For You feed, a notification appears there. Tap it to see the reason.
  3. Read your notifications. Open Inbox, then System notifications, then Account updates. You may need to scroll across to find it. Removal and violation notices explain which guideline was involved.
  4. Open Account check. Account check holds a record of your violations and restrictions. TikTok announced it in 2023 as the Account status page, and the help centre still links to it under that name.

If every check comes back clean and your views are still low, a restriction is probably not the cause. TikTok itself says a video with few views has not necessarily broken a rule. Our guide to why your TikTok views are low covers the other causes, such as weak hooks and low watch time.

What causes a TikTok shadowban?

  • Content that may not suit a broad audience. TikTok's For You feed standards mention topics such as extreme fitness or dieting, sexual suggestiveness, sadness and overgeneralised mental health advice. Some of these are only held back when shown repeatedly, rather than kept off the feed outright.
  • Unoriginal or reused material. Content is ineligible if it includes unoriginal or reused material without anything new. See why you can't repost on TikTok for how reposts work.
  • Engagement bait. Content that tries to manipulate people into giving gifts or inflating likes or follows is also ineligible for the For You feed.
  • A pattern of ineligible posts. Repeatedly posting content that goes against the For You feed standards can lead to the whole account being held back for a time, even without strikes.
  • Rule breaks. Content that breaks the Community Guidelines is removed, and usually adds a strike after a first warning. Repeated violations in one area, such as LIVE or comments, can lead to limits on that feature.

How to fix a TikTok shadowban

Start by reading the reason TikTok gives. It tells you which rule or standard was involved, which is far more useful than general advice. Then:

  • Stop posting the kind of content that was flagged. If one topic or format keeps getting marked ineligible, change it.
  • Make reused clips your own. Add your commentary, your filming or a real edit, or leave them out.
  • Drop engagement bait. Asking for gifts, likes or follows in a pushy way works against you.
  • Appeal mistakes. If a decision looks wrong, appeal it rather than deleting the video. Deleting content does not remove strikes.
  • Keep posting content that follows the rules. Strikes expire after 90 days, so a clean run of posts lets your record clear over time.

How to appeal a TikTok restriction

  1. For a video not eligible for the For You feed. Open the video's analytics, tap the ineligibility notification, then tap Appeal at the top.
  2. For a removed video. Open the notification in Inbox under System notifications and Account updates. It explains why the content was removed, and you can appeal from there if you think it was a mistake.
  3. For a banned account. Log in to the account. You will see a banner about the ban, and you can submit an appeal and download your data from there.

If an appeal succeeds, a restricted video becomes eligible for the For You feed again. For removed content or a banned account, TikTok reinstates it and removes the strike, unless you have already deleted it. TikTok does not publish how long appeals take, so we can't give you a timeframe.

How long does a TikTok shadowban last?

TikTok documents only some of the timings. Strikes expire after 90 days and then no longer count towards a permanent ban. Feature limits on LIVE and direct messages are described as temporary, with no fixed length given. TikTok describes account-level For You feed ineligibility as temporary but does not say how long it lasts, so treat any exact number you see online with caution. For government, politician and news accounts that reach the strike limit, TikTok does give a figure: 90 days off the For You and Following feeds.

Does buying views cause a shadowban?

TikTok's rules prohibit the trade of services that artificially boost engagement, and it says it removes fake likes, followers and other inflated signals when it detects them. So buying engagement goes against TikTok's rules, and it does nothing to fix a restriction. If you choose to buy TikTok views from Folzora once your account is in good standing, treat it as a small push for videos that already work, not a replacement for good content.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if I'm shadowbanned on TikTok?

Turn on analytics in TikTok Studio, open a video's analytics and look for a notice saying it is not eligible for the For You feed. Then check Inbox under System notifications and Account updates, and open Account check in the Safety Center for any violations or restrictions.

Does TikTok tell you if you are shadowbanned?

TikTok does not use the word shadowban, but it says it notifies you about violations and their consequences, and about account-level For You feed restrictions. Videos made ineligible for the For You feed show a notice in their analytics, as long as analytics is turned on.

How long does a TikTok shadowban last?

Strikes expire after 90 days. TikTok does not publish a fixed length for For You feed ineligibility or for most temporary feature limits, so any exact number you see online is not official.

How do I get unshadowbanned on TikTok?

Read the reason TikTok gives, appeal any decision you think is wrong, and stop posting the kind of content that was flagged. Keep posting original content that follows the rules while your strikes expire.

Can you still be found on TikTok if you are shadowbanned?

Usually yes. A video that is not eligible for the For You feed stays on your profile; TikTok only says it won't be shown in the For You feed. If the whole account is made ineligible, TikTok says the account and its content will also be harder to find in search.

Does deleting a video remove a TikTok strike?

No. TikTok says deleting your content does not remove strikes. A successful appeal does remove the strike.
