How Instagram fonts work
Instagram doesn't let you pick a font. These styles are Unicode characters that look like letters, such as the mathematical bold and script alphabets, so they paste anywhere that accepts text. That makes them easy to use, but a few places reject them and some readers can't read them.
Where they work and where they don't
- Work: your display name, bio, captions, comments and Stories text, plus TikTok, X and Facebook profiles and posts.
- Don't work: your @username, which only takes letters, numbers, full stops and underscores.
- Sometimes show as boxes: older phones and some apps lack the rarer symbols. Bold, italic and script have the widest support, so preview on a second device.
- Harder to find: a styled word is a different set of characters from the plain word, so keep the words you want to be found for in normal text.
Screen readers and accessibility
Screen readers may skip styled characters or read each one out by its Unicode name, which turns a short word into a long string of noise. Use fancy fonts for a word or two of decoration and keep your name and key information in plain text.
Bio length
An Instagram bio can be up to 150 characters, which is why the bio box above stops at 150. For what to put in those characters, read Instagram bio ideas: how to write a bio that gets follows.

Frequently asked questions
How do I change the font in my Instagram bio?
Type your text above, tap Copy next to the style you like, then paste it into Edit profile → Bio on Instagram. The same works for your name, captions, comments and stories.
Do these fonts work on TikTok and X?
Yes. The styles are Unicode characters rather than real fonts, so they paste into TikTok, X, Facebook, Discord and most other apps.
Can I use a fancy font in my Instagram username?
No. Usernames only accept letters, numbers, full stops and underscores. Use the styled text in your display name instead, which appears in bold above your bio.
Why do some characters show as boxes?
A few older phones and apps do not include every Unicode symbol. Bold, italic and script styles have the widest support. Check how your bio looks on another device before committing to a rare style.
Are fancy fonts bad for reach or accessibility?
Screen readers may read styled letters awkwardly and search may not match them, so keep your username and key words in normal text and use fancy fonts for accents.
