How long should a TikTok be, and how long should Reels be? There is no single perfect length. Make each video as long as it needs to be and no longer, because both apps care most about whether people keep watching. As a rule of thumb: keep Instagram Reels 3 minutes or less if you want to reach new viewers, because Instagram has told creators that content must be 3 minutes or less to be recommended to people who don't follow you. On TikTok, short videos work well for reach, but videos must be over one minute to earn from the Creator Rewards Program. Uploads can be much longer on both apps. Long limits do not mean long videos get more views.
How long can a TikTok or Instagram Reel be?
Both apps have raised their limits several times, and new options often reach some accounts before others. The table shows what current sources report. If your app shows a different limit, trust what you see on your own upload screen.
| Limit | TikTok | Instagram Reels |
|---|---|---|
| Recorded in the app | Up to 10 minutes, as reported by recent guides | Up to 20 minutes with the newer Reels camera, as reported in late 2025 |
| Uploaded from your phone | Up to 60 minutes on some accounts, as reported by recent guides; others see 10 minutes | Varies by account. Check your own upload screen |
| Length that still gets recommended | No official cut-off | 3 minutes or less for people who don't follow you, according to Instagram's advice to creators |
A bit of history helps explain the confusion. TikTok confirmed in May 2024 that it was testing 60-minute uploads with a limited group of users in some markets. Guides updated in 2026 list 60 minutes for uploads and 10 minutes for in-app recording, though not every account seems to have the longer upload option. Instagram head Adam Mosseri announced in January 2025 that Reels could be up to three minutes long, up from 90 seconds, because creators said 90 seconds was too short. In November 2025, Social Media Today reported that Instagram's Reels camera now supported 20-minute recording, and noted that Instagram has repeatedly said it will only recommend Reels under 3 minutes.
What the platforms actually reward
Neither app says that a certain length is better. What they do say is that watching a video to the end is a strong signal.
- TikTok: in its explanation of the For You feed, TikTok says a strong signal, such as whether someone finishes a longer video from beginning to end, carries more weight than a weak one.
- Instagram: in its ranking explainer, Instagram says the most important predictions for Reels include how likely you are to reshare a reel, watch it all the way through, like it, and go to the audio page.
This is why length on its own does not matter much. A 20-second video that most people finish can beat a 2-minute video that most people leave after five seconds. A longer video is only an advantage if it holds attention all the way through. You can learn more about how this plays out in why your TikTok views are low and how to get on the TikTok For You page.
The TikTok Creator Rewards one-minute rule
If you want to earn from views on TikTok, length matters in a very direct way. When TikTok announced the Creator Rewards Program in March 2024, it said the program rewards high-quality, original content that is over a minute long. Videos of a minute or less do not earn from it, however well they do.
TikTok also said rewards are based on four things: originality, play duration, search value and audience engagement. Play duration means watch time again. So padding a 40-second idea out to 61 seconds is unlikely to help. If people leave halfway, the video earns less and may reach fewer people. To join, TikTok says you need to be at least 18, have at least 10,000 followers and at least 100,000 views in the last 30 days. How long should a TikTok or Reel be? A guide by goal
These are starting points, not rules from the platforms. Test them against your own analytics.
| Your goal | Suggested length | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Reach new people with a quick idea, joke or trend | Short, often under 30 seconds | Easy to watch to the end, and easy to rewatch |
| Earn from TikTok Creator Rewards | Just over 1 minute or longer | Only videos over a minute qualify, and watch time still counts |
| Teach something or tell a story | 1 to 3 minutes | Room to explain, still within Instagram's recommended length |
| Reach new viewers on Instagram Reels | 3 minutes or less | Instagram has said content must be 3 minutes or less to be recommended to non-followers |
| Serve your existing followers in depth | Longer videos are fine | Followers already know you, so they are more likely to stay |
How to find the right length for your account
- Write the idea in one sentence. If the point fits in one sentence, the video probably fits in under 30 seconds. If it needs steps or a story, give it more time.
- Cut the intro. Start with the result, the surprise or the question. Greetings and "in this video" lines are the first place people swipe away.
- Trim every pause. Watch the edit once at normal speed. Cut anything you would skip yourself.
- Check retention. In TikTok Studio or Instagram Insights, look at average watch time and how many people watch to the end. Note where people drop off.
- Test two lengths. Make a short and a longer version of similar ideas over a few weeks. Keep the length that holds people better, not the one that feels more impressive.
Does the same video work on both apps?
Often, yes, as long as it suits both limits. A video between one and three minutes can qualify for TikTok Creator Rewards and still sit inside Instagram's recommended Reels length. Post a clean version without another app's watermark, and adjust captions and text for each audience. If you are choosing where to focus, see Instagram vs TikTok for growth, or compare formats in Instagram Reels vs posts.
Some creators also use a few bought views to help a new post look less empty, for example with TikTok views for new videos or Instagram Reel views from Folzora. That can add social proof, but it does not change how long real viewers watch. TikTok's Community Guidelines and Meta's spam policy also prohibit buying engagement, so treat it as a small extra at most. Length and editing still decide whether a video spreads.
Frequently asked questions
How long should a TikTok be?
There is no official best length. TikTok says finishing a video is a strong signal, so the best length is the shortest one that delivers your idea fully. Quick ideas often work under 30 seconds. If you want to earn from the Creator Rewards Program, videos need to be over one minute.
How long can an Instagram Reel be in 2026?
Instagram raised the upload limit to three minutes in January 2025, and in late 2025 its Reels camera was reported to support recording up to 20 minutes, though not every account sees the same options. Instagram has said content must be three minutes or less to be recommended to people who don't follow you.
Do longer TikTok videos get more views?
Not by default. Length only helps if people keep watching. TikTok says a viewer finishing a longer video is a strong signal, but a long video that people leave early sends weak signals and may reach fewer people.
Do TikTok videos have to be over 1 minute to get paid?
For the Creator Rewards Program, yes. TikTok said the program rewards original content that is over a minute long. Other ways to earn, such as LIVE gifts or brand deals, do not have this rule.
How long should Instagram Reels be?
Long enough to deliver the idea, and three minutes or less if you want Instagram to show the Reel to people who don't follow you. Quick ideas often work in under 30 seconds. Tutorials and stories usually need one to three minutes.
Are Reels longer than 3 minutes shown to non-followers?
Generally not. Instagram has told creators that content must be three minutes or less to be recommended to people who don't follow you. Longer Reels can still be watched by your followers and on your profile, but they are unlikely to be pushed to new audiences.
