How this engagement rate calculator works
It uses the follower formula: add your average likes, comments and shares per post, divide by your follower count and multiply by 100. It then grades the result against typical bands for the platform you picked. Instagram and TikTok insights can also give you reach, which you can use in the second formula below.
By followers (this tool) = (likes + comments + shares) ÷ followers × 100
By reach = (likes + comments + shares) ÷ accounts reached × 100
Example: 12,500 followers and an average post with 420 likes, 18 comments and 6 shares gives 444 ÷ 12,500 × 100 = 3.55% by followers, which grades B (Good) on Instagram. If that post reached 4,000 accounts, the same interactions give 444 ÷ 4,000 × 100 = 11.1% by reach.
Reach-based rates are usually several times higher than follower-based ones, so only compare a number with others worked out the same way. The bands below are for the follower formula.
Bands this tool uses
| Platform | D: Below average | C: Average | B: Good | A: Great | A+: Excellent |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Under 1% | 1–3% | 3–4.5% | 4.5–6% | 6% and up | |
| TikTok | Under 3% | 3–6% | 6–8% | 8–10% | 10% and up |
| Under 0.5% | 0.5–1% | 1–2% | 2–3% | 3% and up | |
| X (Twitter) | Under 0.3% | 0.3–1% | 1–1.5% | 1.5–2% | 2% and up |

Frequently asked questions
How is engagement rate calculated?
Add up the likes, comments (and shares, if you track them) on a post, divide by your follower count and multiply by 100. For a fairer number, average the last 10 to 12 posts instead of using a single one.
Should I calculate engagement by followers or by reach?
Use followers to compare your account with other accounts, because anyone can see follower counts. Use reach to judge how a post landed with the people who actually saw it. Reach-based rates come out several times higher, so never compare one with the other.
What is a good engagement rate on Instagram?
Most Instagram accounts land between 1% and 3%. Anything above 3% is good, and above 6% is excellent. Smaller accounts usually have higher rates than large ones.
What is a good engagement rate on TikTok?
TikTok engagement runs higher than other platforms because the For You feed shows videos to non-followers. Around 3% to 6% is typical, and above 10% is excellent.
How can I increase my engagement rate?
Post consistently at the times your audience is online, open with a strong hook, ask questions that invite comments, reply to comments quickly, and use Reels or short video. Early likes and comments also help a post get pushed to more people.
