A good Instagram engagement rate is roughly 0.5% or more if you divide likes and comments by followers, or around 5% or more if you divide interactions by the number of people who saw the post (reach). Instagram does not publish an official benchmark, and every study counts engagement differently, which is why the two numbers are so far apart. The most useful test is simple: is your rate higher than it was last month, and higher than accounts of a similar size in your niche?

How to calculate your Instagram engagement rate

Engagement rate tells you what share of people interacted with a post. The basic formula is the number of interactions, divided by an audience number, multiplied by 100. The catch is that there are several audience numbers you can divide by, and each gives a very different result.

MethodFormulaBest for
By followersInteractions ÷ followers × 100Comparing your account with other accounts
By reachInteractions ÷ accounts reached × 100Judging how well a post landed with the people who saw it
By viewsInteractions ÷ views × 100Reels and other video posts
Common ways to calculate engagement rate

Interactions usually means likes and comments. Some tools also add shares and saves, which pushes the number up. Whatever you choose, use the same method every time so your numbers stay comparable. Our free engagement rate calculator does the maths for you.

  1. Pick your last 10 to 12 posts. One post can be a fluke. An average over several posts is much more reliable.
  2. Add up the interactions on each post. Likes and comments at minimum. Add shares and saves if you track them.
  3. Divide by your follower count and multiply by 100. For example, 1,000 followers and a post with 70 likes, 15 comments and 5 shares gives 90 ÷ 1,000 × 100 = 9%.
  4. Average the results. That average is your engagement rate. Note it down and check again each month.

What is a good engagement rate on Instagram in 2026?

Three well-known social media tools publish Instagram benchmarks. Their numbers look wildly different, but that is mostly because they use different formulas and samples, not because one of them is wrong.

SourceWhat they countInstagram figure
SocialinsiderLikes + comments ÷ followers, organic posts from business accounts with 1K to 1M followersAbout 0.48% average, about 0.45% in its latest quarter
BufferInteractions (likes, comments, shares) ÷ reach, medianAbout 5.5% median in 2025, down from about 7.3% in 2024
HootsuiteBest-performing format (carousels), all industries; exact formula not statedAbout 4.2%

The takeaway: a 1% rate is about double the average by followers, but low by reach. Always check which formula a benchmark uses before you compare yourself with it.

Why smaller accounts usually score higher

Engagement rate tends to fall as follower count grows. Hootsuite puts this down to smaller accounts tending to have a more focused, passionate follower base. That means a rate that is excellent for an account with 500,000 followers can be weak for an account with 5,000.

Studies do not agree on exact numbers for each follower band, so be wary of any chart that claims precise figures by size. A fairer comparison is with accounts of a similar size in the same niche, and with your own past numbers.

What is a good engagement rate for 10k followers?

Studies split follower bands in different ways, so there is no single agreed figure for 10,000 followers. It helps to turn the averages into real numbers instead. With 10,000 followers, the roughly 0.5% average by followers works out at about 50 likes and comments per post. Around 100 per post (1%) is about double that, and anything well above that is a strong result. Benchmarks are mostly based on business accounts, so compare yourself with similar accounts in your niche too.

If you measure by reach instead, look at how many accounts each post reached in your Insights. A post that reached 3,000 accounts and got 150 interactions has a 5% rate by reach, which is close to Buffer's 2025 median. Brands that pay for posts look at engagement as well as follower count, so see how many followers you need to make money on Instagram.

What is a good engagement rate on TikTok?

TikTok benchmarks are usually measured against views or reach rather than followers, because many people who watch a video do not follow the account. That makes TikTok rates look much higher than Instagram rates by followers, so do not compare the two directly.

SourceWhat they countTikTok figure
SocialinsiderLikes, comments, shares and saves ÷ viewsAbout 4.2% average in 2025, up from 3.85% in 2024
SocialinsiderSame formula, accounts with 10K to 50K followersAbout 3.9% in 2025
BufferEngagements ÷ reach, medianAbout 4.5% in 2025, roughly flat on about 4.4% in 2024
HootsuiteVideos, all industries; exact formula not statedAbout 1.5%

In Socialinsider's TikTok data, the gap between account sizes is small: accounts with 1K to 5K followers score highest, and larger bands sit a little lower. Why engagement matters for reach

Instagram ranks posts by predicting how likely people are to interact with them. In Instagram's own explanation of ranking, Feed looks at how likely you are to spend a few seconds on a post, comment on it, like it, share it or tap on the profile photo. For Reels, the key predictions include whether you will reshare it, watch it to the end, like it and visit the audio page. In Explore, the main predicted actions are likes, saves and shares, and how popular a post seems matters much more than it does in Feed.

So a higher engagement rate is not just a vanity number. It is a sign your content is getting the kinds of interactions the ranking system looks for.

If your engagement has dropped suddenly, the cause is often lower reach rather than worse content. Our guides on why your Instagram reach is down, whether you are shadowbanned on Instagram and why you are losing followers help you work out which it is.

How to improve your engagement rate

  1. Make posts worth saving or sharing. Tips, checklists, before-and-after shots and step-by-step carousels give people a reason to save or send a post, not just scroll past.
  2. Hook people in the first second of a Reel. Watching to the end is one of the things Instagram predicts for Reels. Start with the most interesting moment, not an intro.
  3. Ask a clear question. A specific question in the caption ("Which one would you pick, A or B?") is easier to answer than "Thoughts?".
  4. Reply to comments quickly. Answering comments starts conversations and gives people a reason to come back.
  5. Post when your followers are online. Your Insights show when your audience is most active. See our guide to the best time to post on Instagram.
  6. Post regularly. Buffer found that accounts grew more slowly than usual in weeks when they posted nothing. A steady schedule you can keep beats bursts of activity.
  7. Clean up your bio and profile. A clear bio helps the right people follow you, and the right followers are the ones who engage. Try our Instagram bio ideas.

If you want a post you are proud of to look more established, Instagram likes from Folzora add social proof, with no password needed. But be honest with yourself: bought likes and followers do not replace good content, and they do not tell you what your real audience thinks. Instagram also says third-party apps that generate inauthentic likes, follows and comments break its Community Guidelines and Terms of Use, and it removes that activity. If your posts do not give people a reason to stop, no boost will keep them coming back. If you are weighing it up, read is it safe to buy Instagram followers first.

Common mistakes when measuring engagement

  • Judging on one post. A single viral post or a quiet day can skew the picture. Average 10 to 12 posts.
  • Mixing formulas. Comparing your rate by followers with a benchmark measured by reach makes you look far worse than you are.
  • Ignoring follower quality. Inactive followers lower your rate by followers, even if your content is good.
  • Chasing likes only. Saves, shares and comments say more about whether people valued a post.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good engagement rate on Instagram in 2026?

It depends on the formula. Measured as likes plus comments divided by followers, the average business account is around 0.5% (Socialinsider). Measured as interactions divided by reach, Buffer's 2025 median is around 5.5%. The most useful test is whether your rate beats your own past average and accounts of a similar size.

How do I calculate my Instagram engagement rate?

Add up the likes and comments (and shares and saves, if you track them) on a post, divide by your follower count and multiply by 100. Do this for your last 10 to 12 posts and take the average for a fair number.

Is a 1% engagement rate good on Instagram?

Measured by likes and comments divided by followers, 1% is roughly double the average business account in Socialinsider's data, so it is solid. Measured by reach, it is on the low side. Check which formula you are comparing against.

Why is my Instagram engagement rate going down?

Common reasons are posting less often, content that people like but do not save or share, a growing number of inactive followers, and fewer interactions overall on the platform. Both Buffer and Socialinsider reported lower Instagram engagement rates in 2025 than in 2024, so some of the drop may not be down to you.

What is a good engagement rate for 10k followers on Instagram?

Using the common likes plus comments divided by followers method, the average business account sits around 0.5%, which is about 50 interactions per post at 10,000 followers. Around 100 per post (1%) is roughly double the average. Compare yourself with similar accounts in your niche as well.

What is a good engagement rate on TikTok?

TikTok engagement is usually measured by views. Socialinsider's 2025 average was about 4.2% of views, and about 3.9% for accounts with 10K to 50K followers. Buffer's 2025 median by reach was about 4.5%. Do not compare these directly with Instagram rates measured by followers.

Which Instagram post type gets the most engagement?

In Buffer's analysis, carousels had the highest engagement rate, while Reels reached the most people. Socialinsider also found carousels ahead and single images had the lowest rate. Mixing carousels and Reels is a good starting point.
