A good Instagram bio tells a new visitor who you are, what you post, why they should follow, and what to do next, all in 150 characters or fewer. Lead with what you do in plain words, add one detail that makes you different, and finish with a clear call to action that points to your link. Keep the keywords people search for in plain text, and use special fonts only for a word or two. The same rules work for an aesthetic bio and for your TikTok bio, which just needs to be shorter.

What Instagram gives you to work with

Your bio is more than the text box. Several parts of your profile work together, and each one has a different job.

PartWhat it doesTip
Username (handle)Your @name. Instagram matches search text against it.Keep it short, easy to spell and close to the name people know you by.
Name fieldThe bold line above your bio. Instagram suggests using a name people know you by so they can find you.Use your real or brand name. Adding a short keyword, such as "Sam | Home Baker", can also help.
Bio textUp to 150 characters. Anyone can see it.Say what you post and who it is for. End with a call to action.
LinksUp to 5 links without a subscription.Put your most important link first and name each one clearly.
@ and # in the bioTyping @ or # turns a mention or hashtag into a live link.Link a second account or a branded hashtag, not a list of tags.

A simple structure for a strong bio

Most good bios follow the same pattern. You do not need every line, but going through them in order stops you from leaving out something important.

  1. Say what you do. One short phrase with your main keyword: "Plant-based recipes", "Wedding photographer", "Beginner guitar lessons". This is the line most visitors read first.
  2. Say who it is for or what makes you different. "Weeknight meals under 30 minutes" or "Film photos, Manchester and beyond". A specific promise is easier to remember than a vague one.
  3. Add one line of proof or personality. A real detail: where you are based, how long you have been doing it, a qualification, or a sense of your tone. Only include things that are true.
  4. Finish with a call to action. Tell people what to do next: "New recipe every Tuesday", "Book a session below", "Shop the latest drop". Then make sure the first link matches what you promised.

Notice what they have in common: the first phrase is a clear keyword, there is one specific detail, and the last line tells you what to do. Separators like "|" or line breaks keep it scannable on a small screen.

Aesthetic Instagram bio ideas

An aesthetic bio is mostly about layout and tone, not about saying less. It still needs to tell a visitor what you post. The difference is that it uses short lines, plenty of space and one small decorative touch instead of a block of text.

  • One idea per line. Put what you do, one detail and your call to action on separate lines so the bio is easy to scan.
  • Pick one or two emojis that fit your theme, such as a leaf for a plant account or a camera for a photographer, and use the same ones in your highlight covers.
  • Lower case or simple punctuation can give a calm, soft look. Just keep it readable.
  • Style one word at most. A cursive or serif name can look good, but keep keywords and your call to action in plain letters.

Instagram username ideas that help people find you

Your username and name field matter too. Instagram matches search results by text, and it advises using a handle and profile name that fit your content and a name people know you by. A few simple habits help.

  • Use the name people already know. Your own name, your brand or your shop name is easier to search for than a clever phrase.
  • Add a niche word if your name is taken, such as "samsbakes" or "sam.thebaker", rather than a string of random numbers.
  • Keep it easy to say and spell. If you told someone your handle out loud, would they type it correctly first time?
  • Match it across platforms where you can, so people who find you on TikTok can find you on Instagram too.
  • Put your keyword in the name field if it is not in your username, for example "Sam | Sourdough Baker".

TikTok bio ideas: how to adapt your Instagram bio

The same structure works on TikTok, but the TikTok bio box is shorter, so watch the character counter on the Edit profile screen as you type. Most people cut their Instagram bio down to two parts: what you post and what to do next.

Made-up examples of an Instagram bio cut down for TikTok
  • Do not rely on a link. A clickable website link in your TikTok bio is not open to every account. Our guide on how many followers you need for a link in your TikTok bio explains the rules. Until you have one, point people to your Instagram or ask them to search your name.
  • Say what your videos are about. Many people land on your profile from a single video. A clear bio tells them there is more like it.
  • Keep your name and handle consistent with Instagram so people recognise you. If you later want a badge, see how to get verified on TikTok.

Using special fonts without hurting your bio

"Fancy" bio fonts are not real fonts. They are Unicode symbols that look like letters, which is why you can copy and paste them anywhere. That has a downside. The UK disability charity Scope explains that screen readers may skip these characters or read them out as long descriptions, such as "mathematical sans-serif script t", which makes even short words hard to follow. Styled characters can also be harder to read for people with low vision or dyslexia.

  • Keep your keywords in plain text. What you do, your location and your name should always be normal letters, so people can read them and find you.
  • Style one or two words at most, such as your name or a short tagline, as decoration.
  • Never style your call to action or contact details. Those need to be read quickly and correctly.
  • Preview before you save. Check how it looks on your phone and that every character shows properly.
  • Emojis are fine in moderation. Scope notes that emojis can be more accessible than emoticons made from punctuation, because emojis carry a text description, but a row of them still adds noise.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Being vague. "Dreamer. Doer. Coffee lover." tells a visitor nothing about what they will see if they follow.
  • Stuffing hashtags. One branded hashtag can help. A line of generic tags wastes characters and looks spammy.
  • A link that does not match the call to action. If the bio says "free guide below", the first link should open the free guide.
  • Never updating it. Change your bio when you launch something, move city or change focus. It is the easiest part of your profile to keep fresh.
  • Writing for yourself, not the visitor. Ask: would a stranger know in three seconds why to follow?

A good bio is the start, not the whole job

A clear bio helps people who already found your profile decide to follow. It does not bring people to the profile on its own. That comes from posting content your audience wants, at times they are active (see the best time to post on Instagram), and from building real interaction, which you can measure with a good engagement rate. For more ideas, see how to get more Instagram followers, and if your count is going the wrong way, read why you might be losing followers.

Some creators also use an Instagram followers package so a new profile does not look empty while they build. That can help first impressions, but it does not replace good posts or a clear bio, and Meta's spam rules, which cover Instagram, prohibit buying engagement such as follows. If you are weighing it up, read is it safe to buy Instagram followers first.

Frequently asked questions

How many characters can an Instagram bio have?

Instagram allows a bio of up to 150 characters, and anyone can see it. Your name, username and links are set in their own fields on the Edit profile screen.

What should I put in my Instagram bio?

Say what you do in plain words, add who it is for or what makes you different, include one real detail such as your location, and finish with a call to action that matches your first link.

How do I add more than one link to my Instagram bio?

Go to your profile, tap Edit profile, then add links. Without a subscription you can add up to 5 links. Meta says subscribers to its Meta One plans can add up to 20, and teen accounts cannot use the feature.

Do fancy fonts in an Instagram bio affect search?

Instagram says it matches what people type in search against usernames and bios, among other things. Styled Unicode letters are different characters from normal letters, so keep any words you want to be found for in plain text and use fancy fonts only for decoration.

How do I make a hashtag or another account clickable in my bio?

Type # or @ in your bio and pick from the suggestions. Instagram turns them into live links to the hashtag page or the other profile. A mentioned account is notified and can choose to remove the link.

What makes a good aesthetic Instagram bio?

One that looks calm and tidy but still says what you post. Use short lines, one or two emojis that fit your theme and at most one styled word, and keep your keywords and call to action in plain text.

Can I use my Instagram bio on TikTok?

You can reuse the idea, but the TikTok bio box is shorter, so cut it down to what you post and what to do next. Watch the character counter on TikTok's Edit profile screen, and do not promise a link until your account can add one.
