Most follower drops come from one of four things: the platform removing fake, spam or disabled accounts that followed you; people unfollowing because your content changed or they are tidying their feed; posting less, so fewer new followers replace the ones who leave; or bought followers from low-quality sources being cleaned out. A sudden drop of many followers at once usually points to a clean-up. A slow, steady decline usually points to unfollows. Check your follower numbers in Insights or analytics to see which pattern you have, then fix the cause that fits.
Why do I keep losing followers for no reason?
It almost always has a reason, even if you did nothing different. Some followers leave every day on any account. You only notice it when fewer new people arrive to make up for them. Here are the main causes.
1. The platform removed fake or spam accounts
Both platforms clean out accounts that break their rules. TikTok's integrity rules say that when it finds accounts or content with inauthentic metrics, it will remove fake likes, followers, or other inflated signals. In November 2018, Instagram said it would start removing inauthentic likes, follows and comments created by third-party growth apps, and that affected accounts would get an in-app message.
If some of your followers were bots or spam accounts, your count falls when they are removed, even though no real person left. This kind of drop tends to happen in one go rather than a few at a time.
2. People unfollowed after a change in your content
People follow you for a reason: a topic, a style, a type of video. If you switch niche, post more adverts, or change your format, some of them will leave. Instagram also says that people regularly curate the accounts they follow. Its creator FAQ notes that sharing a reel can lead to some initial follower loss, because your followers see it first and some choose to unfollow. New followers usually come later, as the reel reaches people who do not follow you yet.
3. You are posting less than before
Your follower count is new followers minus people who leave. When you post less often, fewer new people find you, but the normal trickle of unfollows carries on. The result is a net loss, even if nobody is unhappy with you.
4. Low-quality bought followers are being purged
Cheap followers from low-quality sellers are often bot or empty accounts. These are exactly the accounts that platform clean-ups target, so they can disappear weeks or months later. Both Instagram and TikTok prohibit artificially boosting engagement, and TikTok's rules specifically ban the trade of services that artificially boost engagement. Our guide on whether it is safe to buy Instagram followers covers the risks in more detail.
Losing followers vs losing reach
These are two different problems. Follower count is how many accounts follow you. Reach is how many people see your posts. You can lose reach while your follower count stays flat, or lose followers while your reach holds up. If fewer people are seeing your posts but your count looks fine, read why your Instagram reach is down instead.
How to check why you are losing followers
| What you see | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| A big drop in one day, then back to normal | Platform removed fake, spam or disabled accounts | Nothing to fix if you did not buy or trade followers; keep posting |
| Other creators report drops on the same days | Likely a platform-wide clean-up | Wait it out; your real audience is probably unchanged |
| Slow, steady decline over weeks | Unfollows outpacing new follows | Check what changed in your content and how often you post |
| Drop right after a specific post | That post did not fit what your audience followed you for | Compare it with your best posts; adjust future content |
| Drop months after buying followers | Low-quality bought accounts being removed | Stop using that source; focus on content |
- Find when it happened. On Instagram, a professional (creator or business) account can open Insights and look at how its follower numbers changed over time. Labels vary between app versions, and Meta says some account figures are not available below 100 followers. On TikTok, open TikTok Studio, go to analytics and look at how your follower numbers changed over the date range you pick. Menu names can differ between app versions.
- Match the date to your posts. Did the drop start after a certain post, a change of topic or a break from posting? If so, that is your likely cause.
- Look at the size and speed. A sharp one-day drop with no change on your side usually means accounts were removed. A slow leak usually means unfollows.
- Check your follower list. On accounts with 1,000 or more followers, Instagram may flag followers it thinks are potential spam, and lets you review or remove them from your follower list. If many of your followers look like empty or spam accounts, expect more of them to disappear over time.
- Check your account status. If your reach has also fallen, check for restrictions. See our guides to Instagram shadowbans and TikTok shadowbans.
How to stop losing followers
- Keep a steady posting rhythm. You do not need to post every day, but long gaps mean fewer new followers to balance out normal unfollows.
- Stay close to what people followed you for. If you want to change topic, bring it in gradually and explain why.
- Watch what each post does to your count. If one type of post keeps losing followers, post less of it.
- Avoid follow-for-follow and engagement swaps. Followers who only came for a follow back are quick to leave.
- Talk to your audience. Reply to comments and ask what they want to see. People who feel heard are more likely to stay.
- Do not use growth apps that like or follow for you. Instagram says third-party apps that generate inauthentic likes, follows and comments break its Community Guidelines, and it removes that activity. Many of these apps also ask for your password, which puts your account at risk.
Once the drop has stopped, focus on bringing in new people. Our guides on how to get more Instagram followers and how to get your first 1,000 followers on TikTok cover the basics.
What if bought followers drop?
Some drop is common with bought followers, because platforms keep removing accounts they see as fake or inactive. That is why Folzora's follower packages come with a 30-day refill guarantee: if your count drops within 30 days of delivery finishing, you can contact support with your order ID and we top it back up. The details are in our refund and refill policy. Be clear about what this does and does not do. Bought followers can make an account look more established, but they do not watch or share your posts, platform rules prohibit buying engagement, and they will never replace content people want to follow.
Frequently asked questions
Why did I suddenly lose a lot of followers on Instagram?
A large drop in one day usually means Instagram removed accounts that followed you, such as spam, fake or disabled accounts. Instagram has said it removes inauthentic follows, including ones made through third-party growth apps. If you did not buy or trade followers, your real audience is likely unchanged.
Why am I losing followers on TikTok?
The usual reasons are TikTok removing fake followers, people unfollowing after a change in your content, or posting less often so fewer new followers replace those who leave. TikTok's rules say it removes fake likes, followers and other inflated signals when it detects them.
Does Instagram remove inactive followers?
Instagram removes fake and inauthentic follows, and on accounts with 1,000 or more followers it may flag followers it thinks are potential spam. We could not find an official Instagram rule that removes followers simply for being inactive, so treat claims about regular inactive-account purges with caution.
How do I see who unfollowed me on Instagram?
We could not find any official Instagram feature that lists who unfollowed you. With a professional account, Insights shows how your follower numbers changed over time, which helps you spot when the drop happened. Avoid apps that promise to track unfollowers, since many ask for your login.
Is it normal to lose followers after posting?
Yes, a small loss can be normal. Instagram's creator FAQ says some followers may unfollow when they see a new reel, as people regularly curate who they follow. New followers usually arrive as the post reaches people who do not follow you yet.
Will bought followers drop?
Some can, because platforms keep removing accounts they see as fake or inauthentic. Low-quality followers drop the most. Folzora's follower packages include a 30-day refill guarantee for drops after delivery. Platform rules prohibit buying engagement, and bought followers do not replace good content.
