Reels usually get more reach than posts, which makes them the better format for growing followers. Instagram says most of what people see in the Reels tab comes from accounts they do not follow, so a Reel has a real chance of reaching new people. Feed posts, and carousels in particular, are better at keeping your current followers interested and getting likes, saves and shares from them. A sensible plan uses both: Reels to be found, posts to give new followers a reason to stay. Your own Insights will tell you which mix works best for you.
Do Reels get more reach than posts?
Instagram ranks each part of the app differently. In its own explainer, Instagram says that in Reels "the majority of what you see is from accounts you don't follow." Feed is different. It is built mainly around accounts you already follow, with some recommended posts mixed in.
That is the whole case for Reels in one line. A good Reel can be shown to many people who have never heard of you. A photo post mostly goes to people who already follow you, so it is harder for it to bring in new followers.
Instagram also says it makes some Reels less visible, including low-resolution or watermarked Reels, muted Reels, Reels that are mostly text and Reels that have already been posted on Instagram. Reposting a clip with another app's logo on it is one of the easiest ways to waste a Reel.
Carousel vs Reel: when a carousel is the better pick
Carousels are posts with several photos or videos you swipe through. Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, said in a tip video in late 2024 that carousels often get more reach than single photos. He gave two reasons. More pieces of media means more chances for people to interact. And if someone sees a carousel but does not swipe, Instagram can show it to them again later with the next slide.
He also suggested adding music to photo and carousel posts, because that makes them eligible to appear in video spaces like the Reels tab. That gives a still post a small chance at the non-follower reach that Reels get.
Carousels suit content people want to keep: step-by-step tips, before and after photos, recipes, checklists and short guides. That kind of post tends to get saved and sent to friends, and sends are one of the signals Instagram says it weighs most.
What Instagram says it ranks on
In January 2025, Mosseri said the three signals that matter most for ranking are watch time, likes and sends (shares by DM). He added that likes matter slightly more for content shown to your followers, while sends matter slightly more for content shown to people who do not follow you.
That fits the split between the formats. If you want new people, make something worth sending to a friend, which is usually a Reel. If you want your followers to keep engaging, make something they will like and come back to, which is often a carousel.
| Format | Best for | Who mostly sees it | Signals to watch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reels | Being found by new people | Followers plus many non-followers via the Reels tab | Views, watch time, sends |
| Carousels | Saves, shares and repeat interest | Mostly followers, plus some recommendations | Likes, saves, sends |
| Single photos | Updates, announcements, personal moments | Mostly followers | Likes and comments |
How to mix Reels and posts
Instagram does not publish an ideal ratio, and anyone quoting an exact split is guessing. A sensible approach is to lean on Reels when growth is the goal, and use carousels to show new visitors what your account offers.
- Lead with Reels for reach. Post Reels regularly on the topics your audience cares about. Open with the payoff in the first few seconds. Instagram's view rate metric tracks how many viewers keep watching past the first three seconds.
- Back them up with carousels. Turn your best Reel ideas into carousels that go deeper: the full list, the steps, the details. New followers who visit your profile will see there is more to come.
- Keep your content original. Film your own footage and avoid reposting clips with other apps' watermarks. Instagram says it shows those less.
- Review every few weeks. Compare formats in Insights and shift your mix toward what actually brings followers.
Use Insights to decide
In August 2024, Instagram announced it was making Views the main metric for every format, including Reels, photos, carousels and Stories. That makes it easier to compare formats side by side. Views count repeat views, so look at a few other numbers too.
- Views from non-followers: Instagram's Reels insights let creators split views between followers and non-followers. A high non-follower share means the post is reaching new people.
- View rate: for Reels, Instagram shows what share of viewers keep watching after the first three seconds. A low rate points to a weak opening.
- Sends and likes per view: Mosseri suggests checking likes per reach and sends per reach, along with average watch time, not just the raw counts.
- Follows from the post: the clearest sign a format is growing your account.

Can buying views or likes help?
A small boost can make a new Reel or post look less empty, which may help people take it seriously. It does not change watch time or whether people send your post to friends, and those are the signals Instagram says matter most. If you use Instagram views or likes from Folzora, treat them as extra social proof for content that already works, not as a replacement for good Reels and posts. Be aware that Meta's Community Standards, which cover Instagram, say not to buy, sell or exchange engagement, so a boost is never risk-free. Our guide on whether it is safe to buy Instagram followers explains the risks.

Frequently asked questions
Are Reels better than posts for getting followers?
Usually, yes. Instagram says most of what people see in the Reels tab comes from accounts they do not follow, so Reels are usually the best format for reaching new people. Posts are mostly shown to existing followers, which makes them better for keeping your audience engaged than for growing it.
Do carousels get more reach than single photos?
Often, according to Instagram's head Adam Mosseri. Carousels give people more to interact with, and if someone does not swipe, Instagram can show the post to them again with the next slide.
Carousel vs Reel: which should I post?
Post a Reel when you want to reach new people, and a carousel when the content is something people will want to save or send, such as steps, lists or before and after photos. Using both works well for many accounts, so there is no need to stop posting photos.
What is the best ratio of Reels to posts?
Instagram has not published one. Start by leaning on Reels if growth is your goal, then compare follows and views by format in Insights every few weeks and adjust.
Why do my Reels get more views but fewer likes than my posts?
Reels are shown to many people who do not know you, and strangers are less likely to like than followers. That is normal. Look at follows and sends from the Reel as well as likes.
Does adding music to a photo post help reach?
Mosseri has said adding music makes photo and carousel posts eligible to appear in video spaces such as the Reels tab, which gives them a chance to reach people who do not follow you. It is not a guarantee of extra reach.
