There is no switch or hashtag that puts a video on the For You page (FYP). TikTok recommends videos to each viewer using signals such as likes, shares, comments and whether people watch a longer video all the way to the end, which TikTok names as a strong signal. To get on the FYP, make videos people finish, keep them eligible under TikTok's For You feed rules, and describe them clearly with captions and sounds. TikTok says follower count is not a direct factor, so small accounts can be recommended too.
TikTok algorithm explained: how the For You feed picks videos
TikTok has explained publicly how its recommendations work. It ranks videos for each viewer using three kinds of signals:
- What viewers do: videos they like or share, accounts they follow, comments they post and content they create.
- Details of the video: captions, sounds and hashtags.
- Device and account settings: language, country and device type. TikTok says these carry less weight.
Not every signal counts the same. TikTok's own example is that a viewer finishing a longer video is a strong signal, and it gets more weight than a weak one, such as the viewer and creator being in the same country.
Two other points matter for creators. TikTok says neither follower count nor past high-performing videos are direct factors in what it recommends. It also mixes the feed on purpose, so it generally avoids showing two videos in a row from the same creator or with the same sound.
Content that is not eligible for the For You feed
Some videos are allowed on TikTok but are kept out of the For You feed. They can still be found on your profile or through search. They just will not be pushed to new viewers. Based on TikTok's Community Guidelines and other official pages, these are the main cases. Your analytics show whether a post was actually made ineligible.
| Reason | What TikTok says |
|---|---|
| Reused content | Unoriginal or reused material without anything new is not eligible. |
| Engagement manipulation | Content that tries to manipulate people into giving gifts or inflating likes or follows is not eligible. |
| Misinformation | Misinformation that may cause moderate harm is not eligible. |
| Creator under 16 | Content made by people under 16 is not eligible for the For You feed. |
| Brand-new or under review | Videos that have just been uploaded or are under review may not be recommended yet. |
This can also apply to a whole account. TikTok says that if an account posts a lot of ineligible content, it may make the account and its content ineligible for the For You feed and harder to find. Ineligible content may also be restricted from monetisation. Being held back like this is what most people call a shadowban. Our TikTok shadowban guide covers how to check your status and appeal.
How to check if a video is eligible for the For You feed
- Turn on analytics. The notices appear in your analytics, so turn them on first. Go to your profile, tap the menu, open TikTok Studio, then tap Get started under Analytics and turn it on.
- Open the post's analytics. Open the video and tap More insights, or tap More options and then Analytics.
- Read any notice. If the post is ineligible for the For You feed, tap the notification to see the reason. You can also send feedback on the decision.
- Appeal if it is a mistake. Tap Appeal at the top of the notice. If the appeal succeeds, the post can be recommended again.
How to get on the FYP: practical steps
- Stay eligible. Post original work, and don't pressure people for likes, follows or gifts. Both can make a video ineligible.
- Describe the video clearly. Captions, sounds and hashtags help TikTok understand what a video is about. Write a plain caption and use a few hashtags that actually describe it.
- Make videos people finish. Strong hooks, tight pacing and ideas worth sharing help people watch to the end and engage. Our guide on how to go viral on TikTok covers the creative side in detail.
- Keep posting and learn from each video. One slow video does not usually hold back the next, as long as you are not posting a lot of ineligible content. If you are starting from zero, our guide to getting your first 1,000 followers on TikTok has a simple plan.
Myths to ignore
- Adding #fyp or #foryou. TikTok's explanation of its recommendations mentions no special hashtag. Hashtags help describe a video's topic, and #fyp says nothing about the topic.
- You need lots of followers first. TikTok says follower count is not a direct factor in recommendations.
- Deleting and reposting a video. TikTok says it does not recommend duplicated content, so reposting the same video is unlikely to help.
- One viral video guarantees the next. TikTok says past high-performing videos are not a direct factor either. What matters more is how people react to each new video.
Can bought views get you on the For You page?
Not by themselves. Bought TikTok views from a service like Folzora can make a new video look less empty and add some social proof. They do not fix a weak hook, low watch time or a video that is not eligible for the For You feed. TikTok's Community Guidelines also prohibit trading services that artificially boost engagement, and TikTok says it removes fake likes, followers and other inflated signals it detects. Treat them as a small boost for videos that already work, not a replacement for good content. If your views have dropped, our guide to why your TikTok views are low walks through the usual causes, and how to go viral on TikTok covers hooks, retention and trends.
Frequently asked questions
Does using #fyp help you get on the For You page?
There is no sign it does. TikTok's own explanation says hashtags are one of the details it uses to understand what a video is about, and it mentions no special For You hashtag. Hashtags that describe your topic are more useful.
How do I know if my TikTok video is on the For You page?
Turn on analytics in TikTok Studio, then open the video and tap More insights. If the post is ineligible for the For You feed, a notification there explains why and lets you appeal. If there is no notice, the video has not been marked ineligible. Post analytics also usually show where views came from, so a large share from the For You feed means it is being recommended.
Can a small account get on the For You page?
Yes. TikTok says neither follower count nor past high-performing videos are direct factors in its recommendations.
Why is my TikTok not eligible for the For You feed?
Common reasons are reused content without anything new, content that pushes people for likes, follows or gifts, misinformation, or the account holder being under 16, as TikTok does not show content from under 16s in the For You feed. Check the notice in the video's analytics for the exact reason.
How does the TikTok algorithm decide what goes on the For You page?
TikTok ranks videos for each viewer using what they do on the app (likes, shares, follows, comments), details of the video (captions, sounds, hashtags) and, with less weight, device and account settings such as language and country. TikTok gives an example of a strong signal: a viewer finishing a longer video.
Is being ineligible for the For You feed the same as a shadowban?
It is what most people mean by a TikTok shadowban. People can still find the video on your profile or through search, but TikTok will not recommend it in the For You feed. Your post analytics show the notice, and you can appeal it there.
