Does Instagram Notify When You Screenshot?

When Instagram tells someone you took a screenshot and when it does not: stories, posts, reels, profiles, normal DMs, disappearing photos and vanish mode. Plus TikTok.

No, not for most things. Instagram does not notify anyone when you screenshot a story, post, reel, profile or a normal DM. The exceptions are in private messages. Disappearing photos and videos sent in a chat are now protected, so Instagram blocks screenshots of them. In vanish mode, the other person is notified if Instagram detects a screenshot. Everything else, including Close Friends stories and screen recordings of normal content, can be saved with no alert. TikTok does not send screenshot alerts either.

What happens when you take a screenshot on Instagram, based on Instagram's help centre and Meta announcements.

Does Instagram notify when you screenshot a story, post or reel?

You can screenshot someone's story, feed post, reel or profile and they will not get a notification. There is no list of who took screenshots. Instagram's help centre does not describe any screenshot alert for this content. The same goes for a story shared only with Close Friends: it is still a story, so there is no alert. The story owner can see that you viewed it, though. If you are curious what each app does show, see who can see that you viewed a TikTok or Instagram profile.

There was a short exception in 2018. Instagram tested a feature with a small group of users that told people when someone screenshotted their story. Instagram told BuzzFeed News that it had officially stopped testing it, and the feature never rolled out to everyone. If you see an old article saying Instagram warns story owners, it is describing that test.

Does Instagram notify when you screenshot a DM?

Regular messages in a chat do not trigger a screenshot alert. That covers text, normal photos and videos from your camera roll, and posts or reels someone shares with you. Instagram's help centre only describes screenshot protections for disappearing photos and videos, vanish mode and instants, not for these normal messages.

Can you screenshot a view once photo on Instagram?

When you take a photo or video with the camera inside a chat, you can choose how it can be viewed before you send it. View once lets the other person open it one time. Allow replay lets them open it one more time before it disappears.

In October 2024, Meta said it would soon no longer let people use their device to directly screenshot or screen record photos and videos sent with "view once" or "allow replay" in Instagram DMs and Messenger. It also said these photos and videos would not open on Instagram on the web, so people could not get around the block that way. Meta described this as part of its work against sextortion scams, and the post did not limit it to teen accounts.

Instagram's help centre now says: "Taking a screenshot is now disabled for a disappearing photo and video you've sent in a chat." As a sender, you can't view the photo or video again, but you can check whether it was opened or replayed. Some older guides say Instagram tells you when someone screenshots a disappearing photo; with screenshots now blocked, the block is the main protection.

  1. Open your messages. Tap the messages icon in the Instagram app.
  2. Open the chat. Tap the conversation where you sent the disappearing photo or video.
  3. Check the status. The status shows just below the photo or video, for example whether it was opened or replayed.

Instagram says this feature isn't available on a computer, so use the app on your phone or tablet.

Does Instagram notify screenshots in vanish mode?

Vanish mode is a setting for a whole chat. You swipe up in a conversation to turn it on, and seen messages disappear when you leave the chat. Instagram's help centre says you will be notified if someone takes a screenshot or screen recording of a message in vanish mode. Meta has said the same since it launched the feature in 2020.

Instagram also warns that a screenshot is not the only way to keep a message. Someone could still take a photo of their screen with another phone. That is why Instagram suggests using vanish mode only with people you trust. It also says vanish mode may not be available in Europe or Japan.

Instants: no screenshots allowed

Instants launched on Instagram in May 2026. They are quick photos shared from your inbox with Close Friends or followers you follow back. They disappear after they are viewed and can't be seen after 24 hours. Meta's launch post says friends can't screenshot or record the instants you share, and lists this as a general feature, not only a teen protection.

Does TikTok notify when you screenshot?

No. TikTok does not tell people when you screenshot or screen record their videos, profile, comments or messages. TikTok's own privacy tools page lists the controls creators have, and a screenshot alert is not one of them.

What TikTok creators can control is downloads. TikTok says that depending on your privacy settings, other people may be able to Duet, Stitch and download your videos. With a private account, other people can't Duet with, Stitch with or download your videos. That stops the save button, but it does not stop a screenshot or a screen recording.

How to protect what you share

Since most of Instagram can be screenshotted with no alert, the safest rule is simple: assume anything you post can be saved. A few habits help:

  • Use Close Friends for stories you only want a small group to see.
  • If you send a photo in a chat that you don't want kept, view once is safer than a normal photo, but it is not a guarantee.
  • Use vanish mode only with people you know and trust.
  • Make your account private if you want to approve who can follow you.
  • Never send anything you would be upset to see shared. No app can stop a photo taken with a second phone.

If you run a public creator or business account, screenshots are often a good sign. People tend to save posts they find useful. Work on posts worth saving, set up a clear profile with our Instagram bio ideas, and see what "digital creator" means on Instagram if you are choosing an account category.

If you want your profile to look less empty while you build an audience, Folzora offers Instagram followers. They can add some social proof, but they do not replace good content, and Instagram's rules do not allow buying followers or likes. Our guide on how to get more Instagram followers covers the steps that matter most.
