To go live on Instagram you need a public account with at least 1,000 followers. Instagram confirmed the change to TechCrunch on 1 August 2025. Before then, any account could go live, public or private, whatever its size. If you are under 16, you also need a parent's permission. Your account must follow Instagram's rules too, because Live access can be taken away for breaking the Community Guidelines.
Instagram Live requirements in 2026
Here is what you need before the Live option works, based on what Instagram and Meta have said. The rules for earning money on Live are separate and stricter.
| Requirement | What applies | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Followers | At least 1,000 | In force since August 2025 |
| Account type | Public | Private accounts see a notice that they are not eligible |
| Age | Under 16 needs a parent's permission | Teen Account rule, announced April 2025 |
| Account standing | Follow the Community Guidelines | Live access can be revoked for violations |
| Earning with badges | Separate criteria | At launch: 18+, Creator or Business account, 10,000+ followers |
Can you go live on Instagram with less than 1,000 followers?
No, not under the current rules. Accounts that do not qualify see a notice that reads: "Only public accounts with 1,000 followers or more will be able to create live videos." Instagram did not give a detailed reason. According to TechCrunch, it said the change is meant to improve the overall Live viewing experience.
One thing to know: Instagram announced this through an in-app notice and a statement to the press, not a big launch post. Instagram can change rules like this without much notice, so what the app shows you is the final word. If your account is public, has 1,000 followers and still cannot go live, see the checklist further down.
Do you need a public account to go live on Instagram?
Yes. The eligibility notice says only public accounts with 1,000 followers or more can create live videos. Before August 2025, private accounts could go live to their followers. If your account is private, switching it to public is the first thing to change. Keep in mind that a public profile means anyone can see your posts, not just your followers.
What age do you have to be to go live on Instagram?
Instagram does not set a separate hosting age for Live in the way TikTok does. But since 2025, teens under 16 on Teen Accounts cannot go live unless a parent gives permission. Meta announced this on 8 April 2025. Teens also need to meet the same follower and public account rules as everyone else.
How to go live on Instagram
Once your account is eligible, starting a Live takes a few taps. The exact layout can look slightly different depending on your app version.
- Open the create menu. Tap the + button in the Instagram app to open the camera.
- Choose Live. Swipe along the options at the bottom of the screen and select Live.
- Add a title. Give your Live a short title so people know what it is about before they join.
- Start the broadcast. Tap the record button to go live.
Instagram Live features: guests, scheduling and badges
Going live with guests
With Live Rooms, you can go live with up to three guests. You can add them all at once or one by one. To add guests, tap the Rooms icon, then pick from people who have asked to join or search for someone. Anyone blocked by a person in the Live cannot join, and people whose Live access was revoked for breaking the Community Guidelines cannot join as guests. As the host, you can also report and block comments and turn on comment filters.
Scheduling a Live
You can schedule a Live ahead of time instead of starting one on the spot. When Instagram launched scheduling in October 2021, creators could set a Live up to 90 days in advance. Followers can then set a reminder from the posts and Stories you use to promote it. This gives people time to plan around your stream, which usually beats going live without warning.
Badges: earning money from Live
Badges let viewers pay to support you during a Live. They have their own rules on top of the Live requirements. When Instagram opened badges to all eligible US creators in November 2021, you had to be over 18, use a Creator or Business account, have more than 10,000 followers and follow Instagram's monetisation policies. Availability depends on your country, so check your professional dashboard to see if you can apply today. For other ways to earn, see how many followers you need to make money on Instagram.
Why can't I go live on Instagram?
If the Live option is missing or you see an eligibility notice, work through this list:
- You have fewer than 1,000 followers. This is the most common reason since August 2025.
- Your account is private. Switch to a public account in your privacy settings.
- You are under 16 on a Teen Account. A parent needs to give permission through supervision.
- Your account has a Community Guidelines violation. Live access can be removed for breaking the rules. If your reach has also dropped, read our guide to the Instagram shadowban.
- Your app is out of date. Update Instagram and restart it before assuming anything else is wrong.
If you meet every requirement and still cannot go live, report the problem from the Help section in the app's settings so Instagram can check your account.
How to reach 1,000 followers on Instagram
There is no official shortcut. To unlock Live, you need to reach 1,000 followers on a public account. These habits help most:
- Post on a steady schedule. Regular posts give Instagram more chances to show your work to new people.
- Lean on Reels. Reels can be shown to people who do not follow you yet, not just your current followers.
- Stick to a clear topic. People follow when they know what they will get next.
- Talk to your audience. Reply to comments and DMs. It builds the same habit you will need on Live.
- Join other creators' Lives. Watching and chatting in Lives in your niche shows you what works and puts your name in front of people who enjoy Live content.
Our guide on how to get more Instagram followers goes into each of these in more detail.
Some creators also give a new profile a head start with an Instagram followers package. Be clear about the trade-off. Meta's spam policy prohibits buying or selling engagement, including follows. Bought followers do not replace good content, and they will not watch or chat during your Live. People stay on a stream because the host is worth watching.
